Film and Literature

The Calder Valley landscape and the people who have lived and worked here have long inspired creativity in writers and artists.

The valley was home to poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, who is buried in Heptonstall Churchyard. Hughes’s home at Lumb Bank is now an Arvon Writing Center, and of course just a short drive or easy bus ride away is Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage.

More recently the Calder landscape, towns and villages have been central stage for TV productions and major films including Wuthering Heights and The Gallows Pole with locations around Calderdale settings for the famous dramas Gentleman Jack, Happy Valley and Riot Women.

Creativity at the IOU Hostel

The Hostel is managed by arts charity IOU Creation Centre. There are regular creative workshops held at the hostel, and it is home to our Artist in Residence

IOU50 is a 2 year programme to celebrate IOU’s pioneering legacy in experimental art and performance and as part you will fiind a photography and poetry exhibition in the shared spaces and in your bedroom featuring images and quotes from the IOU Archive.
